I’m hired
After a lenghty chat over Yahoo Messenger with my future boss, I was finally hired as a PHP programmer. I’ll be reporting to work on monday when a new PC is already setup for me.
In the course of the interview, he asked me of how I got to be a PHP programmer. I didn’t graduate from a computer-related course like computer science or computer engineering. For a Economics major, it’s really a bit puzzling on how I became a programmer.
It is my passion to program. I relied mostly on books. Books on fundamentals of softwares, operating system, databases… All those that a typical computer science major would have.
Visual Basic 6 was the first programming language I spoke. Then C and later on C++. Wrote Java programs when it was still in 1.1.x. My affair with Linux force me to learn PERL. Tried Python last year out of curousity and eventually liked it that I used it most of the time. PHP, I learned because of blogging. It’s WordPress that got me into PHP.
Back to my conversation with my future boss, he mentioned something that has to do with mashups and XML-RPC API. Since I’m a bit familiar with it because of, again, WordPress, I was able to give him some rough idea on one concept project he has in mind.
I’m happy. Couldn’t be happier. I guess they were impressed with the small test program they specified I write for them. They expect it to be done in 2-3 days, I finished it in 6 hours. Once again, I’m having my self-respect and self-esteem back. I thank the Lord for everything. He surely, moves in mysterious ways.
